Coeur d’Alene commissioned artists from around the area to create these magnificent pieces of art throughout the city as part of the beautification project in 2009.

Take Time
Sculptor: Teresa McHugh

"The eternal connection of our past to our future"

The twenty-foot tall ponderosa pine is a representation of the land, the natural resources, and the people who came before us. The tree proudly honors all these things and reminds us to never forget the sacrifices made. Within the bark of the trunk is a circling raven to acknowledge the Coeur d'Alene Tribe and its rich heritage. The bark at the base of the sculpture is a reminder of the lumber industry and the sawmills which lined the lakeshore for over 100 years. The contemporary "sails" evoke the future of Coeur d'Alene. They symbolize the free flow of ideas and energy, of recreation and beauty. These "sails" swirl around the tree displaying the continual marriage of our past with our future and serve as an expression of diversity. These "sails" also hold a secret message in that they represent the letters Cd'A, for Coeur d'Alene. Can you find the apostrophe? The title "Take Time" invites each of us to take time to look back with gratitude at all the blessings that come with this beautiful area... the mountains, lakes, the earth, and the air we breathe... and to look to the future and the possibilities beyond our knowing.
