The kiwi is a unique and curious bird: it cannot fly, has loose, hair-like feathers, strong legs and no tail.
Kiwis are active at night and this sign indicates where they are known to cross the SH47 highway near native bush, close to the Whakapapa Stream flowing down from Mt Ruapehu. Please drive carefully in this area. Our Kiwi birds are very precious and we try to protect them by placing signs at the places they are known to cross busy roads.
***Drive carefully through kiwi habitat (look out for the distinctive yellow kiwi road sign)***
