For many of us bibliophiles, a quote from Thomas Carlyle is as true today as it was when he said it in 1840, and it's preserved on the cornerstone for the old Carnegie Library that now serves as The Sherman Museum at 301 S Walnut St, Sherman, TX.

In 1840, philosopher, essayist, and general factotum Thomas Carlyle delivered multiple lectures on the role of heroes in history. On May 19th, his lecture focused on men of letters -- writers -- as heroes, and in it, he said, "The true university of these days is a collection of books."

That sentiment is captured here on the cornerstone. On one side, it reads, "Sherman Public Library Erected 1914", and on the other, Carlyle's quote and his name are below "The Gift of Andrew Carnegie to the City of Sherman". This retired Carnegie Library was Sherman's second library, and it served the city until 1973. In 1976, The Sherman Museum began, and it continues to educate the public, young and old alike. Be certain to take note of the old Church of Christ next door: While not open to the public, this historic church building is now used by the museum for storage of the 50,000 objects in their collection.
