The Royal Abbey of Epau is one of the finest examples of Cistercian architecture in France.

In 1229, Berengaria of Navarre, widow of Richard the Lionheart, decides to found the abbey where she will be buried a year later.

At the Revolution, the abbey, almost deserted by monks since the eighteenth century, is sold as national property to an industrialist. It goes through the nineteenth century and the first half of the twentieth century is followed by multiple activities in poorly maintained buildings.

In 1958, the Department of Sarthe acquires and then decides on its restoration that has lasted for nearly 50 years. The bias is to restore the abbey in its original appearance of the thirteenth century. It is at the same time that the Department of Sarthe gives it a cultural vocation.
