The Croatian artist and sculptor Ljubica Matulec created the "Emigrant Monument" in wood in 1989 on the occasion of the 800th Harbor Birthday. 10 years later, the rotten art work fell over. It was once again made by the artist in wood, but then cast in bronze. Since October 14, 2008, the bronze is back at its old monument place.
The sculpture recalls the approximately five million emigrants who have migrated via the Port of Hamburg to the USA, including about 400,000 Croats.
So it was also Croatian citizens who presented this emigrant monument of the Hanseatic city of Hamburg as a gift in memory of all emigrants.
On a base plate in front of the monument stands a Croatian poem by Zeljiko Maljevic:
"Here I am, so close and yet so terribly far away.
I still feel you softly and loudly deep inside me.
And be silent, though I'd like to tell everyone:
How longing I am, my home, for you! "
