The Sisters of Charity wanted to build a hospital especially for the poor, on a non-sectarian basis, so a hospital was built at Potts Point. When it was realised that it was too small, a land grant was sought, and given, with the current premises being built in 1870 as a 150 bed hospital, in the current location. Now it is a 350+ bed hospital, integrated into the public health system of NSW.
