On the side of a multi-storey apartment building, this HUGE sign (21 m wide, x 13 m high) has finally been replaced with an even lower power using controllable LED display, in 2016.
As the decades progressed, and the sign was in need of maintenance, the company that placed it, repaired it.
"Claude Neon has designed, installed, maintained and financed the sign from 1976 to the present day [2010], with key members of the current project management and design teams having been involved with the sign since its inception.
"The sign underwent its most significant upgrade in 1990. The plastic faced Coca-Cola graphics and border were replaced with exposed neon, the red background neon was replaced, and the entire sign was re-wired, the old breaker system replaced with a computer." (

When a more energy efficient lighting system became financially justifiable then plans were made for a complete refit, with the sign dismantled in 2015.
"The neon has been replaced by more than two kilometres of rope LED lighting, the background will be rebuilt and a new computer will take control. Previously controlled by a switching system the size of a van, the new controls are barely larger than a mobile phone." (

"The new Coca Cola sign was officially turned on, on 15 September 2016. It uses a lot less power, it's also the single largest controllable LED sign in the Southern Hemisphere and can change colour." Wiki
