The "Virgin Mary" or "Mary, Mother of God", was a Jewish woman of Nazareth in Galilee. The Bible names her the mother of Jesus through divine intervention.

Christians believe that she conceived her son miraculously by the agency of the Holy Spirit. This happened before her marriage to Joseph. She and Joseph were married and traveled to Bethlehem where Jesus was born.
