From 1867-1960, Buford was an important stop on the Union Pacific Railroad, where giant steam locomotives like the 4-8-8-4 Big Boys and the 4-6-6-4 Challengers stopped for water after summitting Sherman Hill.
After the last steam engines were retired, there was no more need for the UP to stop at Buford. The settlement declined as the railroad workers left. In the 21st century, all that is left of Buford is a tourist trap convenience store, advertising itself as the least populated town in the least populated state.
