In 1835-1836, the city taking advantage of a new system of water elevation from the Charente to the plateau, decided to install the fountain.
In La Rochefoucault stone, the basin was designed by Abadie father, the sculptures are attributed to Romagnèse.
Originally built near the Palace of Justice, this fountain was brought to the center of the square in 1951-52 and lost its railings.
