Built solely as an investment property by H. H. Lang, superintendent of the Kendall Gold Mine at Kendall, Montana, this block housed not only retail establishments but was also the home of Lewistown Masonic Lodge #37, which had lodge rooms on the second floor. On August 26, 1908 the Masons laid the cornerstone for their own building, foreboding the end of their sojourn in the Lang Block.
The following newspaper article on the Lang Block appeared on the front page of the December 28, 1904 issue of the Fergus County Argus shortly after the building's completion.

The Lang building, situated on Main street between Fourth and Fifth avenues, is a stone business block. On the first floor are two large store rooms which will be occupied by the Fad Shoe Store and the Fergus County Hardware company.
On the second floor is the Masonic hall, a banquet hall and kitchen, and large, roomy offices. The building is fitted with all modern improvements and is one of the best blocks in the city. H. H. Lang, superintendent of the Kendall mine, is the owner. The cost of the building will be close to $16,000.
