Venetian municipal flag located on a flagpole at the entrance to the Via Garibaldi on the north side of Venice's Grand Canal.
The flag originally appeared about 1500 years go, as the "Flag of St Mark", the patron Saint of Venice. It contains an image of the winged lion, symbol of Venice, with the open gospel of St Mark. On it is inscribed, "Pax tibi Marce Evangelista Meus" (May Peace Be With You Oh My Dear Evagengelist Mark)". There are 6 "fringes" representative of the 6 sestieri that make up the City of Venice. They are cut in such a way, that if they tatter or tear, they can easily be resewn or replaced, without any harm or damage coming to the winged lion and gospel.
This practice has been in place for over a millennium.
