This is a large culvert, designed to carry a huge volume of water across Coffee Creek Road. The culvert is located approximately 0.75 mile west of Indian Meridian Road, and 2.5 miles north of Route 66, between the towns of Arcadia and Luther.

The culvert is a reinforced concrete tunnel which is 5 ft. by 5 ft. on one side, and about 5 ft. by 6 ft. on the other. It was tempting to walk through the tunnel and it would make a nice hiding spot (in dry weather). The culvert was built in 1936 by the WPA and has been doing its job of flood deterrence for decades.

Extensive WPA work was done on the roads of Oklahoma in the 1930s. 29,324 miles of road and 3729 bridges were built or improved, and 2512 culverts such as this were constructed. For the full story, see the link shown below.
