While the tragedy of the accidental sinking of the K13 submarine was near Scotland, in 1917, there is a lovely Memorial right here in Sydney's north west.

Charles Freestone was the leading telegraphist on board the HMS K13 submarine, as it was undergoing final sea trials on 29 January 1917, off the west coast of Scotland. His story of survival is told on a Historical Sign at the K13 Memorial Park. [Which had been part of his own property, but on his death in 1956, and bequest, became this poignant Memorial in 1961.]

There are multiple plaques on a large boulder, provided by the British Royal Navy, for other British submarine losses in World War One, and World War Two. The top square plaque, below the cross, explains how this Park and Memorial came to be; while the next side-by-side plaques below, are for the World War One submarine losses. The upper plaque reads:

This Park was donated to the City
of Parramatta and the Memorial was
erected in honour of H.M.Submarine
Service, Royal Navy, by Charles Albert
Harry Freestone a survivor of K13,
who after leaving the Royal Navy founded
and for the next thirty years developed
the business of C.A.Freestone Pty. Ltd.
in Parramatta and district.

These Plaques are the gift of

and his Officers are guardians of this
