With this pigeonnier "contraceptive" erected at the foot of the cliff pierced by many natural nesting boxes, the city hopes to regulate the population of birds that dirty the roofs, facades and sidewalks of the city center.
"We have locked 65 pigeons in the dovecote which have been banded, sanitary checked and fed," explains Thierry Capdegelle, regional manager of the SACPA Pigeon Contrôle Group. They form the starting flock, they make their nests and we have the first births. The birds that are born there will always come back to lay eggs. "
The goal is to fix the colony that will be monitored and regulated: "The sterilization is done simply: we shake the egg for 3 seconds, we mark it and put it back in the nest. But we do not sterilize all the eggs: the pigeons would quickly have to desert a place that is not conducive to reproduction. The young pigeons that are born are ringed in their turn. "
The eradication of pigeons would be a mistake, says Thierry Capdegelle: "They are part of the environment and nature abhors the void. Without pigeons, we would see other birds, such as jackdaws, take the place. "
The dovecote could shelter, within a year and a half, 200 to 300 pigeons. That's half the estimated population in the city center, said Mayor Yves Bouloux and his deputy Jean Blanchard: "The goal is to get them out of the church and some other places where they currently nest. Residents tell us that they have already seen an improvement. The dovecote is a gentle method of regulation. "

Avec ce pigeonnier « contraceptif » érigé au pied de la falaise percée de nombreux nichoirs naturels, la ville espère réguler la population des volatiles qui salissent les toitures, les façades et les trottoirs du centre-ville.
« Nous avons enfermé dans le pigeonnier 65 pigeons qui ont été bagués, contrôlés au niveau sanitaire et sont nourris, explique Thierry Capdegelle, responsable régional du groupe SACPA Pigeon contrôle. Ils forment le cheptel de départ, ils font leurs nids et nous avons les premières naissances. Les oiseaux qui sont nés là y reviendront toujours pour pondre.»
L'objectif est de fixer la colonie qui sera suivie et régulée?: « La stérilisation est faite simplement?: on secoue l'œuf pendant 3 secondes, on le marque et on le remet dans le nid. Mais on ne stérilise pas tous les œufs?: les pigeons auraient vite fait de déserter un endroit qui n'est pas propice à la reproduction. Les pigeonneaux qui naissent sont bagués à leur tour. »
L'éradication des pigeons serait une erreur, souligne Thierry Capdegelle?: « Ils font partie de l'environnement et la nature a horreur du vide. Sans pigeons, on verrait d'autres oiseaux, comme les choucas, prendre la place. »
Le pigeonnier pourrait abriter, d'ici un an et demi, 200 à 300 pigeons. C'est la moitié de la population estimée en centre-ville, précisent le maire Yves Bouloux et son adjoint Jean Blanchard?: « Le but est de les faire sortir de l'église et de quelques autres endroits où ils nichent actuellement. Des habitants nous disent qu'ils ont déjà vu une amélioration. Le pigeonnier est une méthode douce de régulation ». "
