Hidden Culvert - Arcadia, OK - WPA Projects on Waymarking.com

Scoping out the old WPA culverts is not always an easy matter. Sometimes you have to look at the terrain and surmise where there might be a culvert. You climb through the weeds with your broom handle and lo and behold, there it is!

This culvert is located on Hiwassee Road about a 3/4 mile north of Route 66. Nothing shows on the surface as you drive by, and only intuition causes you to stop and scope it out. There is a diagonal clearing strip which crosses the road at this point, and may have been a railroad right-of-way at one time. Deep in the high grass we found the concrete curbing, and by scraping away layers and layers of dirt, we found the prize: A WPA stamping. We were unable to determine the size of this culvert, which carries run off from a narrow, deep ditch. The gallery shows some of the efforts needed to bring this culvert out into the light of day again. The website shown below tells the story of the work of the WPA in Oklahoma during the 1930s.
