"1980 McLaren Ford M29-5
For 1980 John Watson's team-mate was the young and talented newcomer, Alain Prost.

Unfortunately the M29 was a relatively unsuccessful car particularly prone to suspension problems.

John Watson's best result of the season was at the Canadian Grand Prix where he achieved fourth place. Watson ended the year joint 10th in the World Drivers' Championship, managing only six points and McLaren were joint seventh in the Constructors' Championship with 11 points.

In 1979 Marlboro suggested to Teddy Mayer that McLaren should consider an amalgamation with Ron Dennis and John Barnard at Project Four. The McLaren boss was not interested. In the summer of 1980 after a disappointing season, the cigarette sponsor came back with the same suggestion, this time thinly disguised as an instruction.

McLaren International was officially born in September 1980, with Ron Dennis and Teddy Mayer as joint Managing Directors."

"This, the fifth M29, was the second and final example produced in 1980. It was first used by Alain Prost in August for the German Grand Prix where he placed a lowly 11th. A week later, the Frenchman finished seventh. He lined up once more with chassis M29-5 but following a crash in practice did not actually start the US Grand Prix at Watkins Glen. New signing Andrea de Cesaris raced the repaired car four more times at the start of 1981 with an 11th as the only result."
