In the area of Sunflower narrow canyons and rugged peaks are the norm. Sunflower is located in one of the few broad canyons where Sycamore creek flows through Sycamore trees and meadows. It is located in an area the connected the capital of Payson with the cavalry post of Fort Reno during the Apache wars. The cavalry built a way station/watering hole in the area. When it was abandoned the native americans burnt it down. In October, 1911 prospectors discovered Cinnabar, the Mercury mineral, in the area and opened the National Mine. The mine is closed although the workings can still be found in the mountains above Sunflower. At this time Sunflower consists of a number of small ranches which are being subdivided into estates for those wishing to flee the heat of the Phoenix metro area. A recent highway realignment eliminated all traffic through the community.
