Sir Alexander Galt was one of the prime railway promoters of the 19th century and one of the first to call for a federal union of the British colonies.

The Sir Alexander Galt Chapter of the I.O.D.E. helped fund the gates and fence for this area of Mountain View Cemetery. It is known as Gates of the Soldiers located at the entrance to the Field of Honour.

There are two granite supports for the gate, one of these is to honor Sir Alexander. The Sir Alexander Galt Chapter of the I.O.D.E was the first to form in Lethbridge on February 1914. Mrs. G. Robinson was the first Regent and the Chapter was named for Sir Alexander Galt, Father of Confederation and founder of Lethbridge.
