The walls around the old city of Dubrovnik date to the late 12th century, when the city, then under the control of the Normans was laid siege to by the Nemastas.

These walls were the latest in a series of fortifications that dated back to the mid 9th century, but were apparently the first that used stomemasonry extensively.

Since then, the walls have been further added to and strengthened several times.

In chronological order:

Saracens 866-867
Venetian Siege 958
Nemanja's Siege 1185
Venetian and Fourth Crusades Siege 1205
Bosnian Siege 1451
Russian Siege 1806
Anglo-Austrian Siege 1814
Yugoslav Siege 1991

It was after the Anglo-Austrian Alliance had defeated French forces in the area that the last of the additions were incurred. The arch was added during the Austro-Hungarian occupation.
Year built or dedicated as indicated on the structure or plaque: 1834

Full Inscription (unless noted above):
ANNO 1834
