This wooden plank bridge is of Continuous Span design, but has been replaced by a concrete bridge on South West Rocks Road, a little closer to Macleay River [Gladstone side].

I couldn't notice any major in difference in the height of the newer and current concrete bridge over Spencers Creek, so it would seem that this one was NOT abandoned 'just' because it was probably flood-prone [the 'whole' South West Rocks Road from Kinchela and Gladstone, through to the other side of Pelican Island, would be prone to going under, anyway!]

While looking for a geocache on or near this bridge I did notice that the wooden side rails are quite rotten - so don't go leaning on it !!

Two sets of Concrete pylons are driven into the muddy tidal creek, with a horizontal concrete 'lintel' joining the pairs of pylons, for the large steel I-Beams to rest on for a 'Continuous Span' style of bridge.

Wooden beams are fixed perpendicular to the steel beams, for the wooden deck planks to be bolted to. There is still wooden side rails which are getting rather rotten, but the steel 'w'-shaped armor-guard railing is in quite reasonable condition.

I don't know for sure, but the newer bridge over Spencers Creek may have been built about the same time as the main, 230 metre long 'Arch Bridge' that crosses the Macleay River into Jerseyville [about 400 metres to the west.]
