Built in 1934, the original rotating Pegasus is made of porcelain and neon on a 50-foot-tall rotating makeshift oil derrick. It was originally atop the 29-story Renaissance Revival Magnolia Building.
Built by Texlite sign company for the Magnolia Oil Company to celebrate the American Petroleum Institute's annual meeting, held in Dallas for the first time in 1934. The flying red Pegasus appeared on Magnolia and later Mobil signs at filling stations.
The original rusty and decaying Pegasus remained atop the Magnolia until 1999 until replaced at a cost of $600,000. “The ‘Flying Red Horse,’ as referred to by locals, immediately became a landmark. Standing majestically 450 feet above street it was visible 75 miles away. Pilots reported catching sight of it 60 miles south in Hillsboro, and some claimed to see it from as far away as Waco.
The Pegaus you see now is the $200,000 restored original. At 42-feet-wide and 40 feet high it rises from the base of a rotating 22-foot-high makeshift oil derrick platform. It was relit on May 27, 2015.
