"Saint Porchaire was a Poitevin, a contemporary of Saint Radegonde, who became an abbot of the Community of Saint-Hilaire in 589 and it was for this reason that he had to intervene to try to calm the revolt of the nuns of the abbey of Saint-Hilaire. Holy Cross after the death of their founder.
Having relinquished his position, he retired to an enclosure near the little church of Saint-Sauveur, then situated between the current Gambetta, Marne and Saint-Pochaire streets. It was there that he died and was buried around the year 600, already enjoying a great reputation for holiness. His grave quickly became a revered place.
Due to the influx of worshipers to his tomb, it was decided to build a larger shrine around 944-950. The remains of the saint, lodged in a stone sarcophagus, were transported to a crypt of this new church which received the name of St. Pochaire.
From this period only the western walls on which support the bell tower and the crypt.
In 1431, the bell of the University, the bell Anne, was installed in the bell tower of the church and is still there. The purpose of this bell was to announce the assemblies of the brand new university.
The church has decayed and its walls threaten ruin in this late fifteenth century. As a result, the construction of a new building is decided. Work began in February 1509 and ended in 1520. The new construction is shorter than the old Carolingian church but wider.
The bell tower of the Saint-Porchaire church dates from the last third of the eleventh century. The ground floor consists of a monumental entrance. It is a sheltered passageway, vaulted with a semicircular cradle.
The church of Saint Porchaire is one of the few double-nave churches. It has two Gothic side-by-side naves: one, in the north, built for parishioners; the other, to the south, for the monks of the priory. Nothing separates them except three cylindrical pillars without capitals. This architectural bias gives them a palm look and creates a light effect. "

S’étant démis de sa charge, il se retira dans un enclos proche de la petite église Saint-Sauveur, située alors, entre les rues actuelles Gambetta, de la Marne et Saint-Pochaire. C’est là qu’il mourut et fut enterré vers l’an 600, jouissant déjà d’une grande réputation de sainteté. Sa tombe devint rapidement un lieu vénéré.
En raison de l’afflux de fidèles à son tombeau, il fut décidé la construction d’un sanctuaire plus vaste vers 944-950. Les restes du saint, logés dans un sarcophage de pierre, furent transportés dans une crypte de cette nouvelle église qui reçut le vocable de Saint-Pochaire.
De cette époque ne subsistent que les murs occidentaux sur lesquels s’appuient le clocher-porche et la crypte.
En 1431, la cloche de l’Université, la cloche Anne, a été installée dans le clocher de l’église et y est toujours. Cette cloche avait pour fonction d’annoncer les assemblées de la toute nouvelle université.
L’église s’est délabrée et ses murs menacent ruinent en cette fin du XVe siècle. De ce fait, la construction d’un nouvel édifice est décidée. Les travaux commencèrent en février 1509 et se terminèrent en 1520. La nouvelle construction est moins longue que l’ancienne église carolingienne mais plus large.
Le clocher-porche de l’église Saint-Porchaire date du dernier tiers du XIe siècle. Le rez-de-chaussée est constitué d’une entrée monumentale. C’est un passage abrité, vouté d’un berceau en plein cintre.
L’église Saint-Porchaire fait partie des rares églises à double-nef. Elle présente deux nefs de style gothique côte-à-côte : l’une, au nord, construite pour les paroissiens ; l’autre, au sud, pour les moines du prieuré. Rien ne les sépare si ce n’est trois piliers cylindriques sans chapiteaux. Ce parti pris architectural leur donne une allure de palmier et crée un effet de légèreté."
