The fountain depicts the Schäfflertanz (English: Barrel-Makers Dance), which is executed in some villages every seven years during the Carnival season.

The tradition of the Schäfflertanz goes back to the year 1517 when Munich was suffering from the plague. Nearly half of the city’s 20,000 inhabitants had succumbed to this terrible disease. When the plague subsided, the Schäffler companions took the initiative to renew the sense of joie de vivre by dancing in the streets with hoops wrapped in greenery, accompanied by lively music. As the inhabitants of Munich heard the commotion, the shutters opened, the faces appeared and they slowly but surely decided that it was possible to go out in the streets. In addition to the catchy dance, the Schäffler clowned with the crowds, bringing smiles to those who have suffered so much.

The Schäfflertanz has evolved in its present form about 130 years ago. The dancers perform seven different figures, many of which are very complex. In their gay costumes and buckled shoes, they are a colorful show. The shoes, by the way, are specially designed for the dancers and usually need to be resoled at least once during the season.
