Dans l'histoire de la ville, la fontaine de Blanchon reste attachée à la présence de l'Hôtel-Dieu. C'est ici que l'on venait laver une partie du linge des malades.
Dans de nombreux villages, un lavoir, où plus fréquemment l'un des bassins de la fontaine publique, était réservé aux familles dans lesquelles il y avait une personne souffrante.
Leur présence traduit la peur de la maladie dans la société d'autrefois, à une époque où les vaccins et les antibiotiques étaient inconnus.
La fontaine de Blanchon peut dater de la moitié du XVIIIe s. On sait qu'elle fut réparée en 1826.
Elle est alimentée par une source dont l'eau arrive jusqu'ici par un petit canal souterrain qui traverse les caves de certaines maisons.
Ce système, parfois mal entretenu autrefois par les propriétaires des maisons en question, qui parfois les détournaient à leur profit, entraînait un mauvais écoulement à la fontaine.
