This antique fire vehicle is on display inside the Hamilton Central Fire Station (also known as Fire Station Number 1).

A sign posted near the vehicle reads:

HAMILTON'S FIRST FIRE PUMPER
1843 JOHN FISHER ENGINE
In 1843, John Fisher, owner of a foundry located at the corner of John and Merrick streets, decided that for his own protections as well as for the protection of the 3,000 citizens of Hamilton, the town needed a fire engine.
The pumper displayed here, was built by John Fisher at his own expense and generously tendered its use to the old Volunteer Bucket Brigade. at peak performance it delivered more than 270 litres (60 gallons) of water per minute.
Horse-drawn pumpers came into use several decades later and the first motorized piece of fire apparatus was introduced to the Hamilton Fire Department in 1911m two years before the construction of this station. By 1926, the Hamilton Fire Department was completely motorized and he last horses were retired.

The best time to view this pumper is during Doors Open Hamilton, an annual event that takes place over the first weekend in May.
