In 1996 Rafael Soler commissioned a large polar hemi-cylinder sundial at the port of San Sebastien de La Gomera. The design is the same as the one at the port of La Palma Mallorca in 1986 but adjusted for the latitude, 28.1° vs 39.3°. See WMFOJR

This cylindrical dial is made of concrete, 2.5 x 4.5 m. The time is indicated by the shadow of the tip of the gnomon on the analemmatic hour lines, every 1/4 hour. The time is corrected for the equation of time and longitude. Note the zodiac symbols on the declination lines.

Rafael Soler Gaya was the Director of the Ports for Spain, a Professor of Civil Engineering and a designer of sundials. He included large sundials in many of the port redevelopment projects, ten in the Balearic Islands, two in the Canaries and two in Barcelona. He wrote a book on sundial design "Diseno Y Construccion De Relojes De Sol" and has published in the BSS and NASS journals on the design of Bifilar Sundials.

Unfortunately this sundial has suffered from vandalism and poor construction. Note the graffiti, brass letters and numbers removed and deterioration of the concrete surface due to poor quality concrete. The similar dial built ten years earlier in Mallorca is in much better condition.
Sundial Type: Polar - dial plate parallel with earth axis
