This building was the original home of the Nova Scotia Agricultural College when it opened in 1905. Today it is named Cumming Hall (in honor of the school’s first Principal, Melville Cumming) and houses the main administrative offices. The campus is located in Bible Hill NS, just outside of Truro.

A few years after the stamp was issued, the Nova Scotia Agricultural College was merged with the Halifax-based Dalhousie University and is now called the Faculty of Agriculture. It offers degrees in agricultural business and economics, horticulture, animal science, pre-engineering, pre-veterinary medicine, aquaculture and many others.

It’s difficult to take an unobstructed photo of this building since there are large flagpoles and a parking lot directly in front of it. I have since found out that Canada Post had similar issues in choosing a photo for the stamp. It seems that every picture of Cumming Hall also had lampposts or no parking signs in it. And what was their solution? Retouch out any extraneous details.

The stamp was part of an ongoing series commemorating Canada’s institutes of higher education. These stamps all have a similar design and usually show the main building on campus.
