FR Avant l’église actuelle dédiée aux saints Gervais et Protais, Pontèves avait connu deux églises. Il y avait eu d’abord une église Sainte-Marie, prés du château, qui fut détruite au XIVème siècle ; puis une autre église dédiée à saint Sébastien et saint Antoine, qui était l’église, que les colons venus de Montegrosso (diocèse d’Albenga) pour récupérer le pays abandonné par ses habitants, construisirent en 1477 près de la tour du Sud-est. En 1666, le conseil municipal jugeant que cette église était trop exigüe et que son état laissait à désirer, décidait la construction d’une nouvelle église sur un autre emplacement. Les travaux commencés aussitôt durèrent jusqu’en 1668, mettant l’édifice en l’état où nous le voyons aujourd’hui.

Cette église, qui a 20 mètres de long, 16 mètres de large et 8 mètres de haut, comporte trois nefs et trois travées. Elle est voûtée d’arêtes aux arcs plein cintre, retombant sur des piliers carrés. Arcs, arcades, piliers sont en pierres de taille ; le reste de l’édifice est en maçonnerie ordinaire. Une façade carrée, au sommet rectiligne, ouvre sur une place son portail cintré, surmonté d’un entablement. Dans cette façade, trois grandes baies éclairent la nef. Accotant la façade, un clocher rectangulaire aux trois-quarts de sa hauteur et hexagonal dans sa partie supérieure, porte une cage d’horloge à la ferrure particulièrement travaillée. Dans ce clocher, une cloche porte la date de 1628. Le chevet est plat ; le chœur voûté d’ogives est riche d’un magnifique retable aux colonnes torses.

Le maître-autel a son tabernacle surmonté d’une couronne royale tenue par deux anges. De part et d’autre du retable s’ouvre une niche qui abrite la statue en bois doré des deux patrons du pays, les saints Gervais et Protais. Les piliers comportent du côté de la nef non pas des pilastres engagés, mais des demi colonnes ; cette disposition serait très rare. Une chaire se signale à l’attention par sa peinture verte et dorée et par son ornementation. Les deux nefs latérales ont à la hauteur de chaque travée un autel orné d’un retable daté du XVIIème siècle.

Cette église possède un véritable trésor d’objets anciens : une croix processionnelle plaquée d’argent portant une inscription provençale et la date de 1517, une autre croix de procession (XVIIème siècle), deux émaux (XVIème siècle), un bassin de cuivre repoussé (XVIème siècle), une curieuse statuette de sainte Anne portant la Sainte Vierge, qui elle-même porte l’enfant Jésus, deux reliquaires en bois doré et de nombreux chandeliers en cuivre datant des XVIIème et XVIIIème siècle.
EN Before the present church dedicated to the Saints Gervais and Protais, Pontèves had known two churches. There was first a church Sainte-Marie, near the castle, which was destroyed in the fourteenth century; then another church dedicated to St. Sebastian and St. Anthony, which was the church, that the settlers from Montegrosso (Diocese of Albenga) to recover the country abandoned by its inhabitants, built in 1477 near the Southeast tower . In this facade, three large windows illuminate the nave. Attacking the facade, a rectangular bell tower three-quarters of its height and hexagonal in its upper part, carries a clock cage with the ironwork particularly worked. In this bell tower, a bell bears the date of 1628. The chevet is flat; the vaulted choir of ogives is rich with a magnificent altarpiece with twisted columns.

The main altar has its tabernacle surmounted by a royal crown held by two angels. On both sides of the altarpiece opens a niche which houses the golden wooden statue of the two patrons of the country, the saints Gervais and Protais. The pillars contain on the side of the nave not engaged pilasters, but half columns; this provision would be very rare. A pulpit stands out for attention by its green and gold paint and ornamentation. The two side aisles have at each span an altar decorated with an altarpiece from the seventeenth century.

This church has a treasure trove of ancient objects: a silver plated processional cross bearing a Provencal inscription and the date of 1517, another processional cross (seventeenth century), two enamels (sixteenth century), a copper basin repulsed (XVIth century), a curious statuette of Saint Anne carrying the Blessed Virgin, who herself bears the baby Jesus, two reliquaries in gilded wood and numerous brass candlesticks dating from the 17th and 18th centuries.
