FR L'emplacement du château est cité dès le XI° siècle. Propriété des Pontevès jusqu'en 1650, c'est le Crésus provençal, Pierre Maurel qui le rachète ensuite et le rénove. Les vestiges de l'édifice appartiennent à la famille Sabran-Pontevès depuis 1862. Le site est accessible depuis le village.

Au Moyen-Age, Pontevès était le chef lieu d’une puissante seigneurie dont dépendait la ville voisine de Barjols. Cité comme Castellum dès 1021, le château est situé sur une éminence rocheuse qui surplombe la plaine. A la fin du XIIème siècle, le village qui l’entoure s’est protégé par une enceinte qui est venue doubler celle de la forteresse. Mais dès le XVème siècle, les Pontevès s’installent dans leur hôtel de Barjols et vendent le château en 1650.

Son nouveau propriétaire, Maurel, un financier aixois surnommé le Crésus de Provence, entreprend son réaménagement complet. L’édifice se compose alors de trois corps de logis flanqués de quatre tours. Du village, on y entrait par une porte qui existe toujours. Au total, une cinquantaine de pièces composaient le vaste bâtiment dont 14 chambres, 4 caves, une chapelle et une galerie. Au cours du XVIIIème siècle, le château tomba petit à petit à l’abandon. Le site et les ruines de l’édifice sont, depuis 1862, propriétés de la famille Sabran-Pontevès.




EN The location of the castle is mentioned in the eleventh century. Property of Pontevès until 1650, it is the Provençal Crésus, Pierre Maurel who buys it then and renovates it. The remains of the building belong to the family Sabran-Pontevès since 1862. The site is accessible from the village.

In the Middle Ages, Pontevès was the chief town of a powerful seigniory on which depended the neighboring town of Barjols. Cited as Castellum from 1021, the castle is located on a rocky eminence which overhangs the plain. At the end of the 12th century, the surrounding village was protected by an enclosure that has doubled that of the fortress. But as early as the 15th century, the Pontevès settled in their hotel in Barjols and sold the castle in 1650.

Its new owner, Maurel, an Aix financier called the Croesus de Provence, undertakes its complete redevelopment. The building consists of three main building flanked by four towers. From the village, we entered through a door that still exists. In total, about fifty rooms made up the vast building including 14 rooms, 4 cellars, a chapel and a gallery. During the eighteenth century, the castle fell gradually abandoned. Since 1862, the site and the ruins of the building have belonged to the Sabran-Pontevès family.
