The National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC for short) was opened on September 24, 2016. (The stamp was issued about one year later in 2017.) It is the nineteenth public gallery/museum/display venue (twentieth if you count the national zoo) operated under the auspices of the Smithsonian Institution. Most of these are located in the Washington DC area but a couple of them are in New York City.

The striking architecture of the new building was inspired by a sculpture (ca. 1930) that architect David Adjaye saw in a Munich museum. The piece, by Yoruban sculptor Olowe of Ise, is actually an intricately carved wooden veranda post, one of two in the Munich museum’s possession. The top part of these posts is in the shape of inverted pyramids and is the motif used for the outside of the building. One of these sculpted posts is now on loan to the new museum and is displayed in one of the exhibits.

The new museum is prominently located right on the National Mall between the Washington Monument and the American History Museum, another Smithsonian establishment.
