A hundred meters from the park that celebrates the courage of the Australian "cobbers", the VC Corner Australian Cemetery was created after the Armistice of 1918.

It includes, in two pits grassed and marked with a cross, the remains - found on the battlefield but unidentified - more than 400 soldiers of the antipodes killed at the Battle of Fromelles launched July 19, 1916.

The bottom of the parcel is occupied by a memorial bearing the names of 1,208 Australian soldiers missing in this assault and deprived of burial.

Conceived as a diversion to the British attack on the Somme, the Battle of Fromelles is today described as the "worst 24 hours in the history of the Australian nation".

At the end of this intervention, their first on the European soil during the Great War, the Australians deplore 5 533 soldiers killed, wounded or missing. This ill-prepared offensive also makes more than a thousand casualties (out of 3,410 committed) in the British ranks.
