Mr. Carpenter shares a headstone with his father. His own inscription, with no epitaph, reads:

Seaborn A.
Carpenter

Born
Oct. 28, 1870

Murdered
Sept. 23, 1896

His father outlived him by nearly ten years, and on the reverse of the headstone is his inscription:

B.T. Carpenter

Aug. 10, 1847
April 27, 1906

Gone but not forgotten

On the plinth is the family name, "Carpenter", and an epitaph:

Knowing our loss is Heaven's gain
You in our memory will forever reign
God for you we know did best,
When he called you home to rest

As for Mr. Carpenter, the son, Findagrave (see Website) sheds some light, with a note from the Sherman Museum. The long and short is that Mr. Carpenter, the father, owned property in the Indian Territory (modern Oklahoma), and he had leased it to a man named Hatfield who wanted to sharecrop. Behind in the rent, Mr. Carpenter sent his son to collect what Hatfield owed.

He never saw his son alive again, as another farmer found Seaborn dead, with two holes in him and his pistol by his side. Hatfield claimed that Seaborn pulled his gun first, but given that the account mentions that Hatfield was later apprehended, it sounds like the outcome of the autopsy didn't favor Hatfield's story.

Mr. Carpenter has also several times been one of those brought back to life, as it were, by the Sherman Museum's "History Comes Alive at West Hill Cemetery" program. Those who take the annual cemetery tour will see a theatrical presentation at multiple stops at the graves of some of the more notable figures here. While the stops are typically for those from Sherman's past, probably the best known burial here is that of Olive Ann Oatman (Fairchild), famous for the blue tattoos on her chin given to her by the Mohaves.
