It is first a large bunch of weeping willows in an isolated corner of Fleurbaix, a few hundred meters from the Australian memorial park Fromelles. If one approaches, one distinguishes a stocky door to which leads a small bridge. Then reveals the Hole Aid Post Cemetery. Surrounded by moats and trees, this place is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful cemeteries of the Commonwealth of the region.

Its layout is the work of Sir Herbert Baker, the architect of the Indian Parliament in Delhi and the Union Building in Pretoria, now the residence of the President of South Africa.

The Hole Aid Post Cemetery was established in September 1914 beside a first aid post on the second British trench line, in a locality called "Le Trou". 356 Commonwealth soldiers are now sitting there, 207 of whom could not be identified. The dead represent the battlefields of Ypres, Le Maisnil (October 1914), Aubers Ridge (May 1915), Loos (September-October 1915) and Fromelles (July 1916).

Described as one of Baker's most sentimental works, the rural site is surrounded by a narrow moat and sheltered by a grove of weeping willows. Visitors approach a footbridge and enter through a delicate cottage-style walkway.
