Lewistown Cemetery is in Fergus County, Montana. Lewistown is the county seat with a population of approximately 6,000 residents. First established around 1880 gold rush. What is most interesting is Lewistown is the geographic center of Montana. You can visit the location near the swimming pool at the Yogo Inn.
Lewistown Cemetery is approximately 25 acres in size with towering trees throughout the cemetery. Own by the city of Lewistown, it is very well maintained. The cemetery was established around 1909, with approximately 8,301 known interments.
In the Veterans' section there are row on row of traditional upright white headstones. There are hundreds of veterans interred in this area. A veterans' memorial plaque mounted on the front of a raised cairn that has a machine gun, helmet and two undetermined rocks and also there is a bell nearby. Graves from all wars and including the Spanish American War. There is one grave marker that is particularly insightful.
Joseph Tilden “Colonel Joe” Montgomery was born in Iowa on August 24, 1876 and passed away February 26, 1984 at the age of 107 years of age.
