The Zhengyangmen Gate of Beijing is a major historic and cultural landmark of the City and the nation. The gate structure is a large and imposing sight that marks the inner entry to the Forbidden City. Now, as it no longer serves an actual protective purpose, the Gate is a museum.
The gatehouse has a long history. Constructed in 1419 it was the main gate of the city, leading directly to the Forbidden City. Since then, with the changes in China's political fortunes the Gate has been modified several times. Most recently, until 1980, it was home to a military garrison. Now it is a museum.
The Museum houses diorama and displays principally dealing with the history and function of the Gate itself, but also with the larger history of Beijing. There are numerous and well designed displays, with bi-lingual English and Chinese signs.
From the top level there is an excellent view of the centre of Beijing.
The Museum is well worth a visit during your exploration of central Beijing.
The Museum Gate is only occasionally open (as at July 2017), and entry requires a security check. Also payment of 20 RMB (~$3).
