The Zhengyangmen Gate of Beijing is a major historic and cultural landmark of the City and the nation. The gate structure is a large and imposing sight that marks the inner entry to the Forbidden City. Now, as it no longer serves an actual protective purpose, the Gate is a museum.
Running through the centre of the Gate is a dividing line indicating the North-South divide of Beijing. At the centre of this line (the centre of the building) is a geographical marker. The marker is the centre point for Beijing, and the measurement point for distances from the city. The Gate aligns geographically with a number of other important cultural sights in the Forbidden City.
The Museum Gate is only occasionally open (as at July 2017), and entry requires a security check. Also payment of 20 RMB (~$3). The Museum is worth the visit.
