The first mention of the church in a cartulary of the abbey of Savigny, "ecclesia de Briannono", dates from the eleventh century. It was dedicated to Saint Irenaeus, second bishop of Lyon and father of the church, who died as a martyr in 202.
It was the priory of a small Benedictine monastery depending on the priory of Marcigny, itself dependent on Cluny.
All that remains of this period is a stone embedded in the wall of the neighboring house, the bell-tower and the choir.
The nave, too small and too dark (it is true what, besides they had forgotten the neons and the heating by the ground ... are they betas nevertheless these masters of work), was replaced in 1837.
The first two floors of the bell tower date from the 11th century and its roof is in glazed tiles. The second floor is pierced with geminated bays.
The apse is pierced by a narrow, walled window, above which is a limestone stone blond engraved with a human face.

La première mention de l’église dans un cartulaire de l’abbaye de Savigny, « ecclesia de Briannono », date du XIe siècle. Elle fut dédiée à saint Irénée, deuxième évêque de Lyon et père de l’église, mort en martyr en 202.
C’était la prieurale d’un petit monastère bénédictin dépendant du prieuré de Marcigny, lui-même dépendant de Cluny.
Il ne reste plus de cette époque qu’une pierre encastrée dans le mur de la maison voisine, le clocher et le chœur.
La nef, trop petite et trop sombre (c’est vrai quoi, en plus ils avaient oublié les néons et le chauffage par le sol… sont-ils bêtas quand même ces maitres d’œuvre), fut remplacée en 1837.
Les deux premiers étages du clocher datent du XIe siècle et son toit est en tuiles vernissées. Le deuxième étage est percé de baies géminées.
L’abside est percée d’une fenêtre étroite, murée, au-dessus de laquelle se trouve une pierre en calcaire blond gravée d’un visage humain.
