In 2015 the Hornsby Heights Bush Fire Brigade celebrated 50 years of volunteers serving this area fighting fires. Originally the brigade was known as 'The Gorge' after the nearby Galston Gorge. In the first year a converted Hillman sedan was used a the fire truck. In the second year a 1942 Chevrolet Blitz became the brigade's first tanker. When it was found abandoned on a Mudgee farm in 2000, it was rebuilt, and titled, "Puff the Tragic Wagon." [From ABC News report of March 2015: (

This Unit is housed in a 'square' brown-brick building, with a 'hip' corrugated iron roof. It has two roller doors for the fire fighting vehicles. Next door is the large "Hornsby/Ku-Ring-Gai Catering Rural Fire Brigade" two-storey brick building. It handles the training for the Hornsby and Kuringgai Shires volunteers, including training and assessment of First Aid skills.
