Agnete og Havmanden er en dansk folkevise, der har dannet inspiration for en række danske digtere, herunder Adam Oehlenschläger og H.C. Andersen.
Visen handler om Agnete, der forelsker sig i en havmand, som hun får børn med og bor med på havets bund. Hun forlader ham dog, og vil aldrig se børnene mere. Folkevisen er også kendt i i norske og svenske udgaver.
Oprindelsen af Agnete og Havmanden er ukendt, men det er muligvis en skillingsvise fra omkring år 1800.

Skulpturen er udført af billedhuggeren professor Johannes C. Bjerg og er en gave til Aarhus By fra Carlsbergfondet og Aarhus belysningsvæsen. Oprindelig var gaven tiltænkt "Svømmehallen", men ved færdiggørelsen af byens nye rådhus placeredes skulpturen syd for dette, og blev afsløret 1. juli 1941.

The story about Agnete and the Seaman is a Danish ballad which has inspired poets like Adam Oehlenschläger and H.C. Andersen. The balad is about a girl who fall in love with a seaman with whom she have children with and live at the bottom of the sea. Later on she leaves him and will never se her children again. The balad is also known in Norway and Sweden. It's origin is not known but it might be a broadside ballad from about 1800.

The sculpture was made by artist and professor Johannes C. Bjerg and was a gift to Aarhus City from The Carlsberg Fund and the Electricity Service in Aarhus. Originally it was ment to be placed at a swimming hall but it was changed and at the openning af the new city hall in 1941 the sculpture was unveiled.
