The shield tunneling machine TRUDE, an acronym for Tief Runter under the Elbe (Deep down under the Elbe), was the largest tunnel boring machine in the world with an outside diameter of 14.20 meters. For the extension of the new Elbe tunnel in Hamburg, between October 1997 and March 2000, a 2560 meter long fourth tunnel under the river bed of the Elbe was drilled using the shield tunneling method. The tunnel boring machine weighing more than 2,000 tonnes carried around 400,000 cubic meters of sand, boulders and stones at an average speed of 6 meters per day.
