Stephen F. Austin is famous for being the "Father of Texas." On the bicentennial of his birth, the sons of the Republic of Texas erected a pink granite monument in front of the old Stone Fort, a building with which he would've been familiar in his lifetime, on the campus of the State University named for him.

The monument reads as follows:

"[Medallion of the Sons of the Republic of Texas]

In memory of
STEPHEN F. AUSTIN
pioneer of Texas colonization

Bicentennial birthday

Nov. 3, 1793 - Nov. 3, 1993

Erected by
the Sons of the Republic of Texas"
