"Marie Caroline Ferdinande Louise de Naples et de Sicile, duchesse de Berry, est née à Caserte en 1798 et morte au château de Brunnsee près de Mureck en Styrie en 1870. Épouse de Charles Ferdinand d'Artois, duc de Berry, fils de Charles X, elle est la mère du comte de Chambord Henri d'Artois, prétendant légitimiste au trône de France. Au nom de son fils le comte de Chambord, elle tenta en vain de prendre le pouvoir en France en 1832 en qualité de « régente ».
Voici en quelques lignes, un résumé de la journée du 28 juin 1828 où elle vint prendre possession du domaine de Chambord au nom de son fils.
Elle quitta à 7 h la préfecture de Blois où elle était arrivée la veille en compagnie de sa suite. Elle s’arrêta tout d’abord à Menars pour visiter le château puis à Avaray pour y déjeuner. Elle prit ensuite le bac pour traverser la Loire et arriva à la porte de Muides à 13h30 où 4000 personnes, l’accueillirent. C’est à pieds et en empruntant l’avenue du maréchal de Saxe qu’elle arriva au château. Après 25 minutes de marche, 150 enfants portant ses couleurs, l’attendaient côté nord, réunis autour des préparatifs d’un feu de joie. Marie Caroline arriva au château par la place d’arme et la porte royale. Elle monta tout de suite aux terrasses en remarquant l’immensité du domaine. La duchesse monta jusque dans la lanterne où elle remarqua beaucoup de graffitis, elle décida d’y laisser sa trace. Elle grava son nom dans du plâtre frais à l’aide d’un poinçon remis par le comte de Mesnars, y ajouta trois médailles et l’on cacha le tout sous un couvercle de bronze à ses initiales.
La duchesse de Berry redescendit de la lanterne en faisant un arrêt dans l’ancien théâtre de Maurice de Saxe. Par la galerie de la duchesse d’Etampes, elle ira sur la terrasse de l’oratoire où elle posera la première pierre de la restauration du château.
La visite à Chambord de la duchesse de Berry. Après plusieurs discours et commentaires sur la restauration du château, on lui présenta une gravure représentant sa venue à Chambord, vue imaginée quelques années auparavant ainsi qu’un projet dessiné de la fontaine Caroline. La duchesse demanda alors quelques renseignements sur la disposition et le nombre d’appartements du château, en visita quelques-uns. Puis redescendit au parterre par le bras nord où l’attendaient les habitants de Chambord. Elle sortit du donjon sous une haie d’honneur formée par les enfants et échangea quelques mots avec plusieurs personnes.
Il est alors 16h30, la duchesse est au château depuis deux heures. Elle prit alors un peu de repos en partant en calèche jusqu’à la fontaine Caroline, construite le 31 août 1822. En ces lieux, la duchesse de Berry entendit un nouveau discours.
Marie-Caroline quitta ensuite le domaine en voiture par la porte de La Chaussée, non sans y entendre un discours d’adieu. Traversa le parc de Saumery et arriva à la préfecture de Blois à 17h30. Elle honora de sa présence un bal organisé par la ville.
La fontaine Caroline construite en l’honneur de la duchesse avant sa venue à Chambord se situe dans un bosquet d’arbres situés sur l’actuel parking P2. Elle est constituée d’un bloc rectangulaire en tuffeau et porte sur sa face principale un élément sculpté de forme ronde qui n’est autre qu’un des médaillons aux armes du maréchal Berthier.
Dans ses mémoires, Jacques de Morgan, petit-fils d’Adrien de Calonne, écrit à propos de cette fontaine : « Plein d’admiration pour le jeune prince, le naïf Adrien avait élevé en un affreux style gréco romain une fontaine en face du château sur la rive droite du Cosson, une fontaine « monumentale » et inscrivit sur le fronton : « Ainsi que tes bienfaits/ Mes ondes salutaires/Ne tariront jamais ». Hélas, souvent je suis allé à la fontaine Caroline et jamais je n’y ai vu une goutte d’eau ! »."

The visit to Chambord of the Duchess of Berry. After several speeches and comments on the restoration of the castle, he was presented with an engraving representing his arrival at Chambord, a view imagined a few years before and a drawing of the Caroline Fountain. The duchess then asked for some information on the disposition and the number of apartments of the chateau, visiting some of them. Then descended to the parterre by the north arm where the inhabitants of Chambord awaited him. It is then 16:30, the duchess is at the castle since two hours. She then took a little rest by going by carriage to the Caroline Fountain, built on August 31, 1822. In these places, the Duchess of Berry heard a new speech.
Marie Caroline then left the domain by car through La Chaussée's door, not without hearing a farewell speech. Traversa Saumery Park and arrived at the prefecture of Blois at 17:30. She honored with her presence a ball organized by the city.
The Caroline fountain built in honor of the duchess before her arrival in Chambord is located in a grove of trees located on the current parking P2. It consists of a rectangular tufa block and carries on its main face a round carved element which is none other than one of the medallions with the arms of Marshal Berthier.
In his memoirs, Jacques de Morgan, grandson of Adrien de Calonne, writes about this fountain: "Full of admiration for the young prince, the naive Adrien had raised in a dreadful Greco-Roman style a fountain in front of the castle on the right bank of the Cosson, a fountain "monumental" and wrote on the pediment: "As your benefits / My waves salutary / Never dry up". Alas, I often went to the Caroline Fountain and never saw a drop of water! "."
