This modern, red granite headstone has a simple inscription:

Gertrude Meade
Scalped by Indians
1845-1848

Texas was a wild place to be in its early days, and this is an example of how brutal those who came before us could be to each other. Settlers were often unkind to the natives they encountered, and sometimes, the natives were unkind to the settlers. "A Fate Worse Than Death: Indian Captivities in the West", by Gregory and Susan Michno, is an excellent read on the subject, but unfortunately, further details of Miss Meade's fate are unavailable to us.
