This elegant broken column tombstone with its symbolic mourning drapery over the top, adorns the grave of Mister (we checked) Tillie Hoya, son of Nacogdoches pioneer Johannes Van der Hoya. He is buried next to his brother Frank.
Tillie must have had a difficult adult life. When we looked to his background on Ancestry, we discovered that he is listed as suffering from insanity on the 1880 US Census Schedule for Defective, Dependent, and Delinquent Classes.
The duration of his illness is listed as: perpetuity.
According to the census his insanity onset at age 32.
Happily he does not require being locked in a cell either by day or night, and he does not need to be restrained by mechanical or other means.
He is listed as having been an inmate at the Lunatic Asylum in Austin, for a period of 1.5 months.
We found him in the 1860, 1870, 1880, and 1910 US censuses, usually working as a farmer with several unmarried brothers and at least 1 unmarried sister.
Tilly died on 17 Sep 1922 of malaria, and is buried next to a younger brother, Fritz Hoya.
