"GROWTH OF A REDWOOD TREE
The age of a tree can be determined by counting the
layers or rings. Each year a tree increase in size by
adding a new layer of wood outside the old. The tree
from which this cross section was cut was 1,392 years
old. The tree was already 948 years old in 1492 when
Columbus landed in the Americas.
Coast Redwoods are the tallest living organisms
on earth. They can grow o be more than 2,000
years old. Many of the trees in Big Basin are between
1,000 and 2,000 years old."
