"On the way along Simeonstrasse you will notice the unusual building on the left, the House of the Three Magi (Dreikoenigenhaus), built around 1230 when Trier's medieval city wall was not yet finished.

Each house had to defend itself and the entrance was the »window« on the right, accessible only by ladder or wooden staircase that could be pulled up (Trier still has six such Romanesque residential towers, the Frankenturm / Dietrichstrasse from around 1100 being the oldest).

The doors level with the street are modern; there is a café inside, Graham Greene's bakerie in The Name of Action; the color scheme of the house, however, is the recreation of considerable original remains.

Please note: The House of the Three Magi can be viewed only from the outside; it contains a café, however."

EN (Translation):
"The Epiphany House on Simeon Street in Trier, near the Porta Nigra, is an early Gothic residential building built from a Romanesque residential tower, named after a painting of the epiphany that once hung in this house.

Originally the house was called "Zum Säulchen" and was built in 1230. The main entrance was on the 1st floor (above the current right entrance) and could only be reached via a train staircase. In case of danger this could be obtained and belongings were secured. In Trier, there were probably seven to ten such fortified residential towers, of which in addition to the Three Kings House but only the tower Jerusalem and the Frankenturm are preserved. These towers served as the homes of wealthy and politically influential families, the Dreikönigenhaus probably belonged to a Trierer Schöffenfamilie.

After various renovations, the building was restored in 1938 and 1973, especially during the first repair tried to restore the medieval state as much as possible. "
