At the beginning of the eighteenth century, religious life in the region is dominated by the activities of the monastic dwelling of Fonds Saint Jacques.

The famous Father Jean Baptiste Labat runs the parish of Fonds St-Jacques until 1705. He undertakes upon his arrival in 1696, the construction of a sacristy.

Over the years the church becomes too small. Father Gailhat Pierre Lucien thought of enlarging the building in collaboration with the factory council. The factory council is an institution composed of clerics and lay people who manage the affairs of the parish.

In 1858 the parish had 1500 francs for the repair and construction of the bell tower. Work resumed and a tribune was added. It is intended to accommodate schoolchildren.

Farmers came to offer their contribution to the repair and expansion of the building. The church becomes operational in 1866.

New benches were installed: the nave enlarged while the two existing bells were remelted.

Despite its expansion, the church will soon prove too small. It must be said that the population was growing very rapidly. In 1860 there were about 8000 inhabitants at Sainte-Marie, the church was enclosed in the village; it had to be moved. It could only accommodate 433 people.

It is the 6 of August of 1891, Monsignor CARMENE during a big ceremony blessed the church Notre Dame of the Assumption of Sainte-Marie. Twenty-one years were needed for the construction of the Church which was undergoing the onslaught of hurricanes that touched Martinique.
