Located in a magnificent site overlooking the Caribbean Sea, in 1763 the domain of La Pagerie was born a little girl promised a fabulous destiny: Marie-Joseph-Rose Tascher de la Pagerie, future Josephine Empress of the French.

Josephine spent her first sixteen years in the domain of the Pagerie, known at the time under the name of "Little Guinea", which then covered more than 300 hectares and housed 200 slaves. The estate lived on the cultivation and manufacture of sugar, coffee and indigo, exported to France.

The native house was partly destroyed by a hurricane in 1766. The walls of Mme de la Pagerie's resting-room were raised and today constitute a charming little house of stones and pink tiles converted into a small museum of the Empress. There are preserved some 200 different objects, her bed of a young girl in wood of Courbaril, letters of Napoleon, portraits, furniture and memories having belonged to him.
