On the south side of E. Main Street (Highway 70A) in downtown Wilson, a park area has been set aside to honor the town, and its citizens. This monument is a large granite memorial to the City of Wilson. Three granite plaques are flanked by brick pillars. The center monument tells the town's story, and to the right and left are engraved all those citizens and businesses who contributed to this monument.
CITY OF WILSON Jake Hamon, an Ardmore oilman & John Ringling, the circus magnate joined forces to build a railroad (the Oklahoma, New Mexico & Pacific Railroad) west from Ardmore. The first spike was driven on August 4, 1913 & plans proceeded for depots to be constructed. On September 22, 1913 it was announced a contract had been written for the erection of a depot at the new town site about one mile west of Hewitt. The new town was named in honor of John Ringling's secretary Charles Wilson about the same time oil was discovered in what became known as the Hewitt Field. Wilson quickly became an oil boom town and by January 1914 a local newspaper declared Wilson the Wonder City of Carter County. While Wilson was founded in the fall of 1913, it was not officially incorporated until November 5, 1914. Wilson's centennial celebration was held exactly 100 years later - on November5, 2014. As part of the centennial celebration murals were painted depicting Wilson. The state and the country supporters of the Wilson centennial & especially the centennial murals are recorded on the adjoining plaques.
